Resumen
GREIVE VEIGA, Cynthia. Hist. educ. anu. [online]. 2008, vol.9. ISSN 2313-9277.
The objective of this paper is to discuss the ethnic origin of the Brazilian public school students in the 19th century and its little visibility in the historiographical analysis of education in Brazil. The text is organized in two sections. Firstly, issues relative to the formation of the national identity and the influence of the qualifying discourse of the European Caucasian individual relative to the civilized person are discussed. Secondly, it is presented the result of the survey of the presence of poor mixed-race and African-Brazilian children in Brazilian public schools in relation to the claims of the civilizing function of education, in contradiction of the statement of racial impediments for public school attendance. Conclusions are drawn on the tensions and the precarious public school organization along the 19th century due mainly to the students' ethnic and social class origins.
