The quality ofinitial and continuing teacher training is an important element for the improvement of school education. However, although it has been the object of analysis and of pedagogical intervention, the study of its history remains little explored. The article presents the results of a research whose objective was to identify, analyze and systematize the historical investigations about the initial teacher training of teachers and professors in Argentina that study the period 1860-1990. The results show that most ofthe work focuses the analysis on training policies and especially on the stages of creation and consolidation at the primary (1869-1910 y 1910-1930) and secondary (1904-1930 y 1930-1955) levéis. Other aspects, such as pedagogical ideas and educational practices, are invisible, as is the history of the initial teacher training at the initial level and in the provinces. The article contributes to the history of teacher training in Argentina by tracing the chiaroscuro of its research, while proposing coordinates to advance towards afield research agenda.
