This article analyzes the development of the Argentinean manufacturing sector in the context of MERCOSUR trade relations. In this context, the article identifies those Argentinean manufactured products which have been protected from Brazilian imports through non-tariff barriers (NTB). The article describes three periods within the development of Argentinean industry since the beginnings of MERCOSUR and explains the context of the main NTB that provoked conflicts with Brazil. By identifying the problematic sectors, it reflects on the limited role of regional institutions in those conflicts and on the limits that the integration process has shown in establishing common criteria for the implementation of NTB.
