This article approaches the peculiarities of the early urbanism in the Caribbean focusing on the city of Matanzas, considered the first modern city of Cuba. Founded in 1693, it is an unknown city as well as the Cuban villages erected before the configuration of the cuadrícula toward the third decade of the XVI century. But the cuadrícula is not the only form of regular urbanism in Spanish America. Matanzas offers, in the contrary, a different proposal related with the Leyes de Población, (1573).
