Resumen

DOCOLA, Silvia. From a village without limits to the delineation project to define a capital city: Rosario 1852-1873. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2017, vol.47, n.2, pp.161-173. ISSN 2362-2024.

This paper examines the first attempts to delineate the city plan of Rosario. It presents the process that goes from the first design made by Oroño to delineate the urban areas that existed in 1852, until the 1873 delineation project. The city lacked a founding act, and therefore an original layout. Different delineation proposals debates arose regarding how the city should be, where it should end and what should be done about its boundaries. The study of the city plans and other written documents allows us to interpret those different projects. They all proposed a regular pattern as well as a larger extended city, which contrasted with the current, rather small built area. A few, however, encouraged an open-ended metropolis, while others recommended a closed city in order to form  an urban rural unit. In this contested context, the city delineation that configured its limits was also a key point of the finally failed Rosario's candidacy as capital city of the Nation.
