Resumen

JORQUERA SILVA, Natalia. Técnicas y desarrollo histórico del patrimonio de tierra en la capital de Chile entre los siglos XVI y XXTechniques and historical development of earthen heritage in the capital of Chile between the 16th and 20th century. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2018, vol.48, n.1, pp.109-123. ISSN 2362-2024.

The architectural heritage of Santiago de Chile was built predominantly with raw earth. Part of this heritage is still preserved, despite the transformations the capital of Chile experienced and the numerous earthquakes that hit it. However, the use of earth has not been properly valued, both because it is hidden under plasters, as well as because its presence has not been quantified to show its real importance. Therefore, as part of a larger investigation and using different sources of information, it has been possible to estimate the presence of earth material in Santiago. Thus, this article aims to show the historical development of the use of earth in the historical buildings of the capital, to describe the building techniques used between the 16th and 20th century and their main characteristics, and to quantitatively demonstrate the presence of earthen buildings both in the past and nowadays.
