Italian architecture has always coped with the country’s history. The ancient legacy has inspired the design of many new buildings. Fascism recovered classical architecture as an identity, between the political power and Imperial Rome. This boosted archaeological research to revive the Latin world. The excavations performed in Ostia by the archaeologist Calza led to the discovery of an unknown residential type: the insulae, a block of multiple dwellings with more than one floor. The excavations, the texts, and also Gismondi’s fascinating reconstructive drawings, refer continuously to the insulae as an unsurpassable model that led to modern construction and the development of a Roman architecture. Many contemporary architects designs were inspired by Ostia’s architecture, with its details and typological approaches, both in popular construction as well as in intensive roman construction.
