CALDERON ARCHINA, Aldana y ALVAREZ, Leandro. Water Policy and Restoration on Lagunas de Guanacache: approaches to a transdisciplinary dialogue. Bol. estud. geogr. [online]. 2022, n.117, pp.11-32. Epub 27-Jun-2023. ISSN 2525-1813. http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.40.012.
This contribution focuses on the Guanacache lake system recomposition project, which foresees the construction of dams to restore the hydrological cycle in a sector of the Desaguadero river basin on the border between Mendoza and San Luis provinces. The work focuses on the first section of the work, inaugurated in 2014 within the area declared as a Ramsar site. Specifically, the objective is to comprehensively assess the effects of the work from a biophysical and social perspective by combining different methods. On the one hand, we calculated the irrigated area by processing satellite images with the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. On the other hand, we add data from ethnographic fieldwork with residents and park ranger staff during different stays throughout 2017. Our main results are that the irrigated area detected two years after the intervention, increased from 43 ha. in the 2005-2006 summer season to 421 ha. for the 2015-2016 period. For their part, the settlers point out changes in the environment such as higher humidity, increased rainfall and the return of birds, but there are conflicting views on "conservation" that reflects in the ways of inhabiting and conceiving the environment.
