Abstract This article addresses overeducation among Argentinian university graduates during the period 2003-2018. The study purposes a reconsideration of the nature of this phenomenon based on a discussion about the role of education in capital accumulation. A critical review of the arguments provided by the neoclassical theory is carried out, confronting them with an alternative approach based on the notion of the production of surplus labor force as an essential characteristic of the capitalist mode of production. Regarding empirical evidence, the method used for the identification of overeducation is objective. Based on the information from the Permanent Household Survey, it is studied to what extent university graduates are working in professional occupations. Also, a panel study is made to account for the degree of permanence in overeducation.
