Resumen
COSCIA, Vanesa y MARSHALL, Adriana. Trade unions representations in Argentina’s media: exploratory analysis. Estud. trab. [online]. 2020, n.60, pp.153-186. ISSN 0327-5744.
In this exploratory study we analyze media representations on trade unions in Argentina, one of the factors that contribute to shape social images. To this end, we examine a sample of news on trade union issues published in selected years in the digital versions of the two main Argentinean newspapers (Clarín and La Nación). First, we examine the incidence, in that sample, of news that may be regarded to be “negative” because their headlines report labor conflicts, inter- or intra- union disputes, or acts of corruption, transgressions or dubious events involving unions or union leaders, and the thematic structure of those news. Second, a random sample of those “negative” news is analyzed considering the news´ story in full (headline and body): topic, causes, whether the news is connected to other stories, privileged emphases, and the relationship between headline and body of the story. Results suggest that the representations of trade union and union leaders in the two main Argentinean newspapers tend to be predominantly unfavorable, although no strong anti-union bias is observable. These conclusions may constitute an input for future studies on the construction of social perceptions on trade unions.
