Resumen

CARDONE, Carmen Carina; PINEDA, Carolina  y  USANDIZAGA, Marisol. Epidemiological report of postural reeducation with the Three Squares method. Argentinian j. respiratory physical therapy [online]. 2022, vol.4, n.1, pp.16-25.  Epub 23-Feb-2022. ISSN 2618-4095.  http://dx.doi.org/10.58172/ajrpt.v4i1.182.

Objectives:

To know the demographic variables and medical diagnosis of subjects who were only assessed on posture and treated using the Three Squares method. As a secondary objective, we aim to describe changes in pain, flexibility of hips and spine in flexion at session 10 and session 20.

Materials and method:

An observational, descriptive, longitudinal, and retrospective study. We collected data on the demographics, diagnoses, affected body regions, etiopathogenesis, biotypes, and primary retraction areas of subjects aged 7-90 years who received office physiotherapy treatment from 1994 to 2020. The visual analogue scale (VAS) scores, middle finger tip-to-floor distance, and lumbar Schober test (LST), and total Schober test (TST) scores were registered at session 1 (baseline), 10 (1), and 20 (2).

Results:

A total of 301 subjects were analyzed: 21 (7%) for postural assessment, 280 (93%) for assessment and treatment. The median age was 42 years (IQR 27-57), and 178 (59.1%) were female. A total of 468 reasons for consultation were recorded, and 115 (38.2%) subjects had more than one reason. Sixty nine (22.9%) subjects had lumbosciatic pain and 251 (85.7%) had cervical rectification. The median baseline pain was 7 on VAS (IQR 5-9), the most affected body regions were the spine and thorax. The musculoskeletal etiopathogenesis and carbonic biotype were the most prevalent, and the primary retraction area was the dorsal spine. Among sessions, variations were observed in VAS scores, middle finger tip-to-floor distance, and LST and TST scores.

Conclusion:

The median age was 42, mainly women, and the most prevalent medical diagnosis was lumbosciatic pain. Although it is not possible to determine the relation between intervention and outcome, an improvement was observed in VAS scores, middle finger tip-to-floor distance, and LST and TST scores between baseline and assessments 1 and 2.
