Resumen

DEL PILAR ZAZUETA, María. De Coca-Cola a Vampi-Cola: políticas, negocios, y el consumo de refrescos y azúcar en México (1971982). Apunt. investig. CECYP [online]. 2012, n.22. ISSN 1851-9814.

Since the 195s, the excessive consumption of soft-drinks in Mexico has worried doctors, government officials and members of civil society. This article analyzes the 197-1982 period, when the Mexican state was actively involved in trying to reduce the consumption of soft-drinks and sugar due to health and economic concerns. The administrations of the period designed policies to reduce the effects of growing economic inequality, which included improving the diet. The case of soft-drinks and sugar illustrates how diverse needs and interests of the Mexican state resulted in contradictory policies regarding the consumption of these products. On the one hand, sugar production was politically important for the government because large sectors of the peasantry worked in this industry, whose primary clients were soft-drink companies. On the other hand, government consumer protection agencies and health authorities launched campaigns against growing sugar and soft-drink consumption. This article analyzes these contradictory policies as well as their origins and consequences.
