Resumen

FARBERMAN, Judith. Tres miradas sobre paisaje, identidad regional y cultura folclórica en Santiago del Estero. Prismas [online]. 2010, vol.14, n.1, pp.71-93. ISSN 1852-0499.

This article explores the relationship between landscape, identity and popular culture of Santiago del Estero in the works of Ricardo Rojas, Bernardo Canal Feijóo and Orestes Di Lullo. In my opinion, Di Lullo and Canal Feijóo revisited El país de la selva (1907) in some of their works, especially in those written in the 30's and 40's. Three issues are analyzed here. The first one is the search for the origins of folk local culture in the colonial period. Because of the low impact of European immigration in the province, the three authors focused on the Spanish conquest and the subsequent biological and cultural mixing as the starting point for a local culture they regarded as still strong and original. The second one is the identifi cation between landscape and folk culture. Di Lullo and Canal shared with Rojas the idea that popular imagination came from the wild landscape and so did the sensitivity of peasants. Consequently, the destruction of the woods could only lead to that of folklore. Thirdly, folklore was made into an identity seal in the province. As Rojas had done before, Canal and Di Lullo tracked the indigenous, Hispanic and mestizo components in the folk culture of Santiago and interpreted that ancestral heritage in the light of their personal readings of local history.
