Resumen

DELGADO ROCHE, Livan; MARTINEZ SANCHEZ, Gregorio  y  DIAZ BATISTA, Arquímides. Determination of oxidative stress markers in cardiovascular disease patients. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2009, vol.43, n.3, pp.307-313. ISSN 0325-2957.

The aim of this study was to investigate the status of an extensive array of redox indices in cardiovascular disease patients compared with healthy subjects. Blood samples from 113 patients and 60 healthy subjects were tested by spectrophotometric techniques. All measured biomarkers of antioxidants/pro-oxidant balance were significantly (p<0.05) modified in patients compared with normal subjects. An increase in biomolecule damage markers and a significant (p<0.05) reduction in the soluble antioxidant glutathione was observed. Antioxidant enzymes were activated in these patients with a disruption of the catalase/superoxide dismutase balance. In addition, the global indicator of susceptibility to lipid peroxidation was increased by 73.02% in patients compared to the control group and the indicator of total antioxidant capacity was significantly (p<0.05) reduced. In these patients there are high levels of oxidative stress. The evaluated indicators could be extrapolated to routine clinical analysis and contribute to an integral overview o cardiovascular diseases physiopathology and could also be used as indices of treatment efficacy.

Palabras clave : Oxidative stress; Reactive oxygen species; Cardiovascular diseases.
