Resumen

RAZQUIN, C.J; MADDONNI, G.A  y  VEGA, C.R.C. Estimación no destructiva del área foliar en plantas individuales de maíz (Zea mays L.) creciendo en canopeos. Agriscientia [online]. 2017, vol.34, n.1, pp.27-38. ISSN 1668-298X.

In maize (Zea mays L.), intraspecific competition for resources impacts on morpho-physiological traits such as size and persistence of green leaf area. In this study, four mathematical equations (Ec.1 to Ec.4) for non-destructive estimation of leaf area per plant at silking (AFp) were calibrated and validated in four genotypes growing in canopies under different levels of soil N (0 and 400 kg N ha-1) and three plant populations (2, 9 and 16 pl m-2). Genotype and plant density produced the most significant variations in the vertical leaf area profile. Equations differed in their goodness of ft (Ec.4 > Ec.1=Ec.2 > Ec.3). Ec.4, which includes a parameter associated with foliar senescence, showed the best predictive performance to estimate AFp in a wide range of plant growth, and particularly in the most suppressed individuals of the population. Owing to its simplicity of application based on the fact that its parameters are easy and fast to measure, Ec.4 would be the most suitable equation to model AFp in plant population studies dealing with competitive ability in plant canopies undergoing different levels of resource competition.
