The so-called «risk-need-responsivity» model (RNR) to intervene with adult offenders has shown important results in developed countries in terms of reducing recidivism, up to 35% decline. (Andrews, Bonta & Wormith, 2011). In this context, the Chilean government bought the license of this model to be implemented in Chilean prisons. This article analyzes RNR’s implementation in two penitentiary centers in the Maule region, Chile, based on interviews with seven professionals working in the national prison service (Gendarmería de Chile). Our findings suggest that although the RNR is known and value as a good model by the professionals interviewed, there are not adequate conditions for successful implementation, considering the precariousness of the prison infrastructure, the precarious (without exercise and evaluation) training of professionals, and a highly complex prison environment for treatment, where security prevails over social reintegration. Therefore, despite international evidence in favor of this model, it is important to pay attention to implementation conditions of the programs for them to be successful.
