GIAMBIAGI, L.B.; SURIANO, J. e MAESCUA, J.. Multiepisodic extension during the Early Jurassic in the Atuel depocentre of the Neuquén basin. Rev. Asoc. Geol. Argent. [online]. 2005, vol.60, n.3, pp.524-534. ISSN 0004-4822.
Structural and paleostress studies of the northernmost part of the Atuel depocentre of the Neuquén basin show that the area has undergone at least two rifting episodes during the Lower Jurassic. The first episode occurred during the deposition of the El Freno fluvial strata, with the development of a series of NNE trending faults. It is likely that the NE to NNE inherited structural lineations of the Paleozoic basement had a strong control during this extensional stage. As the ENE extensional direction was oblique to these pre-existing structures, there was a sinistral strike-slip movement along the rift faults. The second rifting event developed during the deposition of the lower part of the Puesto Araya Formation marine sediments and its faults were localized close to the main rift normal fault, which has a NNW trend.
