BERNALDEZ, Patricia C. et al. Otitis media crónica supurada en niños. Arch. argent. pediatr. [online]. 2004, vol.102, n.3, pp.174-179. ISSN 0325-0075.

Introduction. Chronic suppurative otitis media is a stage of ear disease with a chronic inflammation of the middle ear and the mastoid and in which a nonintact tympanic membrane (perforation) and discharge (otorrhea) are present. To determine the clinical findings in chidren with chronic otitis media a longitudinal, prospective, descriptive study was performed during 3 months at the Otorinolaryngology Service of a Pediatric Hospital. Population, material and methods. 115 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media were evaluated. Results. 96 patients were included (51% [n=49] male-49% [n= 47] female). Median age: 77 months (SD 43.78). Median time of otorrhea was 12 months (range -1-175 months). Unilateral chronic otitis media was present in 66.7% (64); the condition was bilateral in 33.3% (32). Maxillary sinusitis was diagnosed in 50% (48) patients. Microbiology: A total of 153 organisms were recovered from middle ear aspirates of the patients, 50% (48) grew mixed cultures The most common bacteria isolated was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (53/153) and Proteus (33/153). Anaerobic bacteria were present in 18/153 cultures. Topic treatment with boric acid in 70% alcohol solution dried otorrhea in 77% of cases treated initially with local treatment. Conclusions. Management of chronic suppurative otitis media in children must consider clinical findings, bacteriological isolates and therapeutic costs.
