CANAVESE, Gabriela Fernanda. Ética y estética de la civilidad barroca: Coacción exterior y gobierno de la imagen en la primera modernidad hispánica. Cuad. hist. Esp. [online]. 2003, vol.78, pp.167-188. ISSN 0325-1195.

The baroque was the social order that characterized the three centuries of the Ancient Regime. The cultural framework that distinguishes the baroque spirit within the first modern hispanic period, strengthens the idea of the preponderance of the "social being"; or the being perceived above the individual or the idea of "being"; itself. As a result of the cruel rivalry to flaunt social category, ostentation will be the external face of existence, the need, obsession and engine to show social lineage, the longing to induce admiration and respect, to arouse envy. And the ambitions to surpass and darken all the rivals (both the well known distinguished owners and the pretentious prospective ones yet unknown) will mark the daily life of the court population and in particular of the nobles, who have the main paradigmatic role of leading life styles, issues and trends.

Palavras-chave : Baroque civility; Modern hispanic period; Nobility; Appearance; Ostentation; Behaviour; Daily life; Sociocultural history.
