The Residency is a remunerated, postgraduate training system, with full-time dedication, characterized by the practice of programmed and supervised healthcare activities based on an Educational Program, that leads to the biochemist's complete training. Based on our experience in the City of Buenos Aires, the main goals of this presentation are to transmit the current structure and development of the Residency in Biochemistry, and to consider possible  changes in order to adapt the teaching of Biochemistry to the new millennium's scientific and healthcare scenarios. In order to enhance the possibilities of learning and development, strategies should be generated in the laboratories, considering that this teaching/learning process is bi-directional and benefits both the forming institution and the residents' training. The scientific and technological changes have modified Clinical Biochemistry practice and the roles of the biochemist. Not only do the biochemists contribute with clinical and diagnostic data, but they also interacts with other professionals of the Health Team as active and essential members.  Therefore, the Residency Educational Program must define a work project oriented towards healthcare, education, research and management. The role of the government and the universities is essential in the design of training policies and in the regulation and control of residencies.
