CASTILLO, Susana et al. Atherogenic risk factos and metabolic syndrome: In a group of hospital civil servants in Posadas, Misiones, Argentina. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2005, vol.39, n.4, pp.445-452. ISSN 0325-2957.
Since cardiovascular diseases constitute the first death cause in Misiones, the frequency of greater Risk Factors (RF) for Coronary Cardiac Disease (CCD) in a sample of hospital civil servants was analyzed in order to estimate the absolute risk for CCD in ten years, according to Framingham, and also to know the frequency of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) according to ATPIII criteria. A number of 448 apparently healthy workers of public hospitals were evaluated: 323 women and 125 men, with an average age of 43 ± 9 and 41 ± 10, respectively. Blood was extracted with a 12-hour fast for the biochemical determinations. The statistical test used for the sample comparison was square chi. The highest RF frequecy was: hypercholesterolemia 37.3%, family backgrounds of CCD 35.3%, HTA 30.0%, chol-HDL diminished 28.0%, cigarette addiction 26.5% and age 16.7%. Significant differencies were found between sexes, women and men, for dimished HDL-chol, 49.2% vs 19.8% (p < 0.001); age, 30.6 vs 11.5% (p < 0.001) and family backgrounds 25.6 vs 39.1% (p < 0.01). The risk for CCD in ten years was higher for males. The frequency of MS in the whole group was 22.1%, with significant differencies between sexes, men vs women, for the RF of MS; hypertriglyceridemy 47.9 vs 23.8% (p < 0.001), HTA 37.0 vs 26.2% (p < 0.05) and altered fasting glucemia 12.4 vs 5.8% (p < 0.05). Each province should know population's the RF profile with an aim at instrumenting prevention programs in accordance with local realities.
