TROMBETTA, Luis et al. Hematological alterations in AIDS-associated cryptococcosis. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2008, vol.42, n.4, pp.557-560. ISSN 0325-2957.

The hematologic characteristics at the moment of admission of 44 patients treated for cryptococcosis associated with AIDS in the XI Ward of the Muñiz Hospital, from January of 2000 to December of 2004, were retrospectively evaluated. In each case, the results of the hematologic studies and TCD4+ lymphocytes count were taken into account (red cell, leukocytes and platelet counts), at the moment of admission. In 33 (84.61%) out of 39 patients, the erythrocytes count was <4.500.000/mm3 and in 31 (79.49%), hemoglobin concentration was <13.6 g/dL; hematocrit, whose result was available in 42 (95.45%) patients, was <40% in 32 (76.19%) of them. In 13 (30.95%) of 42 leukocyte counts, <4.000 cells/mm3 were observed, and in 13 (36.11%) of 36 platelet counts, there were <150.000/mm3. Regarding the TCD4+ lymphocyte counts, 34 (97.14%) out of 35 patients with this value available had <200 cells/mm3. Cytopenias were the most common alterations found in AIDS-associated cryptococcosis evaluated patients and their etiology could be the HIV disease, due to this mycosis and eventually the coexistent pathologies that are generally observed in them.
