DELGADO ROCHE, Livan; REGALADO HACES, Denet  e  RIVERO ALEN, Ana Luisa. Disruption of systemic redox environment in atherosclerotic disease patients. Acta bioquím. clín. latinoam. [online]. 2012, vol.46, n.3, pp.375-383. ISSN 0325-2957.

Atherosclerosis and derived cardiovascular diseases represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the western world. It is known that oxidative stress and inflammation play a central role in the physiopathology of this disease. The aim of the present work was to analyse the behaviour of some redox biomarkers in atherosclerotic disease patients. The redox markers were evaluated in the plasma of 40 patients and 50 healthy subjects through spectrophotometric techniques. All measured biomarkers were significantly modified (p<0.05) with respect to control group. An increase in biomolecule damages was observed and there was an activation of antioxidant enzyme activity. Besides, susceptibility to lipid peroxidation was higher in patients than in healthy subjects. The main conclusion of the present work is that the oxidative stress level in patients is severe. Furthermore, the evaluated markers could be used as clinical markers to have a more comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
