The missions founded by the Society of Jesus amongst the Guarani people during the 17th and 18th centuries have been studied from a variety of disciplines. This paper focus on archaeological works and research carried out by Archaeology. We present a critical review on what has happened in the countries that hold material culture of Jesuit-Guarani origin, with special emphasis on the historical buildings located in the province of Misiones (Argentina). This systematization ranges from the first archaeological research to recent works carried out not only in ancient missions but also in the existing remains among the villages, considering a territorial perspective. We discuss progresses and difficulties presented throughout time, to conclude with some thoughts on the future.
