ROTUNNO, A. B. et al. Study about the influence of NaCl intake on thirst and some cardiovascular parameters in dogs. InVet [online]. 2006, vol.8, n.1, pp.177-181. ISSN 1668-3498.
The aim of this study was to record the changes on some cardiovascular parameters according to variation on dietary sodium level on clinically healthy dogs. There were used 9 dogs, allotted to 3 groups. Each group was given the 3 diets, containing different NaCl level (low sodium: 0.043%, medium sodium: 0.500%, high sodium: 2.000%), following a multiple latin squares design (3x3). In each experimental period, blood pressure, sodium and water intake were measured and electrocardiograms were taken. The high sodium diet tended to raise dogs' average serum sodium concentration (P=0.059). Water intake increased significantly with the high sodium treatment (P=0.003). It is discussed that, for the levels of sodium included, in short periods, the variables that change are water intake and sodium.
