MOLINA, V. et al. Seroepidemiology and control of trichinella in pigs from Sierra Grande, Argentina. InVet [online]. 2012, vol.14, n.1, pp.33-40. ISSN 1668-3498.

The Sierra Grande area, in the province of Río Negro, Argentine, has been particularly affected by trichinellosis, wich remains locally endemic. In the year 2000 a descriptive study was designed to recognize the natural history of trichinellosis in the area and over the period 2001 - 2010 a control program was carried out with early detection of infected pigs using serology by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) screening confirmed by Western blot and slaughter and destruction infected pigs. The aim of this study is evaluate the results of control program implemented to reduce the prevalence of trichinellosis in pigs in this area. First results (2001/02) showed that out of 179 pigs studied, 36 (20.1%) were positive. In 2007/08 a total of 277 pigs from 17 breeding farms were studied and only 4 (1.4%) were positive. In 2009/10 all the pigs were negative. No human cases were found during the working period. The control program based on the slaughter of pigs that were serologically positive was successful to limit the prevalence of the disease.
