CABRERA, Eleonora Rojas; PERANOVICH, Andrés; LOPEZ, Santiago Rodríguez  e  TUMAS, Natalia. Adolescent mortality beyond external causes. An analysis in Argentina in the 2005-2007 and 2015-2017 triennia. Astrolabio [online]. 2021, n.27, pp.249-275. ISSN 1668-7515.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.55441/1668.7515.n27.28724.

This paper analyzes, from a socio-demographic perspective, the adolescent mortality in Argentina beyond external causes, in the 2005-2007 and 2015-2017 triennia. For this purpose, we calculate mortality rates by sex, age group, selected causes, and geographical regions based on data from the National Health Statistics and Information Office and the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses. We also calculate the Gini Coefficient and Years of Life Lost at the regional level, in order to deepen the analysis of the spatial dynamics of mortality.

The results show a reduction in adolescent mortality for all non-external causes. However, they reveal in addition: (a) a higher mortality in men; (b) mortality rises in adolescents aged 15-19 years, regardless of sex; (c) tumors are still the main cause of non-external death; (d) mortality from diseases of the central nervous system, circulatory and respiratory systems and maternal causes increases, mainly in adolescents aged 15-19 years; and (e) differences among regions persist, mostly in the detriment of the Northeast and Northwest regions.

These results reinforce the importance of taking actions focused on the particularities of each geographical context and the factors that most influence the occurrence of registered deaths. All these in order to provide a more comprehensive health care of adolescents, and thus achieve healthier and more sustainable societies in the future.
