CRAVINO, María Cristina e BACHILLER, Santiago. Social representation and stigmatization of popular settlements in Buenos Aires and Comodoro Rivadavia. Cuad. Fac. Humanid. Cienc. Soc., Univ. Nac. Jujuy [online]. 2020, n.57, pp.41-72. ISSN 1668-8104.
The purpose of this article is to make a comparison about the dominant socio-spatial representations (urban or geographic imaginaries) related to the popular settlements (shantytowns and settlements) of two Argentine cities of different sizes: the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA) and Comodoro Rivadavia. In the AMBA, a moral reading prevailed over the popular settlements. On the contrary, in Comodoro Rivadavia urban degradation is an imaginary that has less relevance in social representations. Unlike the AMBA, in Comodoro, the perception of the territory is not based on a dualism that opposes a center (morally valued) to a periphery. In this way, we find that stigmas are spatialized differently due to factors such as the type of historical construction, the role of the media and the state interventions
