ODORIZZI, A; AROLFO, V  e  BASIGALUP, D. Índice de daño de gorgojos y rendimiento de forraje en poblaciones de alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) con alto número de raíces laterales. RIA. Rev. investig. agropecu. [online]. 2014, vol.40, n.3, pp.312-316. ISSN 1669-2314.

In the genetic improvement of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), those genotypes selected for branched root system or high number of lateral roots may be important to reduce the damage caused by the root curculio complex in Argentina. The alfalfa breeding program at INTA Manfredi developed several experimental populations with different fall dormancy obtained by phenotypic recurrent selection for high number of lateral roots or branched root system, two of which were used in this study. The evaluation trials were planted in 2008 in the EEA Manfredi - INTA (Cordoba, Argentina). The evaluated traits were curculio damage (Categories (Cat) 1 = no damage to 5 = very severe damage), dry matter yield (B) during cutting season 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 and 2009/2010 and curculio damage index (IDG). The forage yield of SIMA 614 did not differ statistically from the non dormant checks ProINTA Super Monarca and ProINTA Mora, both developed based on a high potential for forage production as the main selection criteria. Meanwhile, the SIMA 545 although not differed from ProINTA Patricia. The IDG range (3.18 to 3.80) indicates that the curculio complex caused high damage in all materials, without being detected differences. In this context, SIMAs 545 and 614 respectively occupied the second and third place in the ranking of severity, close to ProINTA Super Monarca, the most affected by the plague. In all materials, the category 4 (severe damage) was the most frequent. As with the IDG, the SIMAs 545 and 614 and ProINTA Super Monarca exhibited the greatest number of plants with severe damage (Cat 5) and additionally, the lower frequencies of undamaged plants (Cat 1) and slight damage (Cat 2). ProINTA Super Monarca and SIMAs 545 and 614, despite having recorded the highest IDG and the highest frequency of plants in Cat 5, were the materials most forage yield productive. In this context, might infer that these populations have significant levels of damage tolerance to the larvae curculio complex.
