The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is performed to measure tolerance to submaximal exercise in patients with certain health conditions and in which physiological parameters are measured, as well as the total distance walked. As part of the clinical exam, an experimental study was conducted in 3 groups of animals (Group 1: brachiocephalic. Group 2: obese. Group 3: control) before starting, heart and respiratory rates were measured. After that, they walked during six minutes in a 30-meters track. Right after that, dogs were reevaluated, and the distance walked was measured. Distance covered: group 1: 349 +/- 65m. Group 2: 341 +/- 96m. Group 3: 414 +/- 65m (p< 0.05). Resting heart rate: group 1: 98 +/- 15 bpm. group 3: 84 +/- 11 bpm (p< 0.05). There were no differences between groups 1 and 2. Heart rate at the end of the track: group 1: 112 +/- 12. Group 2: 105 +/- 18 bpm. Group 3: 88 +/- 11 bpm (p=0.001). Respi­ ratory rate: there were no differences in the 3 groups before the test started. Respiratory rate at the end of the route: Group 1: 50 +/- 11 bpm with an increase of 15 +/- 7.7 bpm at the end of the test. Group 2: 54 +/- 11 bpm with an increase of 18 +/- 7 bpm at the end of the test. Group 3: 39 +/- 8.2 bpm with an increase of 5.8 +/- 4.4 bpm at the end of the test (p< 0.05 groups 1 and 2 vs. 3). There were no differences between brachiocephalic and obese dogs in the physiological variables measured. These results suggest that the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are affected by similar pathophysiological conditions during exercise. Also, this study opens the door for more research about the effect of obesity in dogs.
