GLOEL, Matthias. The Portuguese municipal chambers and the (non) journey of Philip III. Rev. Esc. Hist. [online]. 2017, vol.16, n.2, pp.00-00. ISSN 1669-9041.

The goal of this article is to investigate the attitude the local Portuguese elites were taking through municipal chambers on the issue of the journey Philip III had to carry out to his kingdom. This journey was only made in 1619, 21 years after the king had ascended to the throne. We analyze the letters the municipal chambers wrote to communicate themselves with the monarch to find out, how they reacted to the constant delays of the royal journey and which arguments they used to convince Philip to stop delaying it. Another attitude we investigate is the one the chambers took on the requests of the court to make an economic contribution to make the royal journey to Portugal possible and the arguments they used to avoid this service. We consider letters from all over the kingdom, from Porto and Braga in the north, Coimbra, among others, in the center unto Beja in the south and, of course, Lisbon, the kingdom’s main city. In this context we will point out major differences in the attitude the Lisbon chamber had in comparison with the periphery ones.
