LUENGO, J et al. Study of wettability and charactrization of the PDMS - glass system in microfluidic devices. An. AFA [online]. 2017, vol.28, n.1, pp.10-14. ISSN 0327-358X.

The wettability of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces treated with air plasma was studied. PDMS is an attractive silicone elastomer as the base material for biomedical microfluidic applications; however in many cases the hydrophobic surface of the PDMS can be problematic. Surface treatment with air plasma is one of the conventional methods for both the sealing of glass channels and, for surface activation by improving the hydrophobicity conditions. In this work, the wettability of the modified PDMS was quantified by contact angle measurements, for mineral oil and for water, deposited on surfaces of treated PDMS. The variation of the contact angle with the time of exposure to the plasma was analyzed. The stability of the wetting properties as a function of the time after treatment of PDMS surface was studied. Finally, we have analyzed the mobility of fluids like mineral oil and water in PDMS channels sealed with glass, by studying the relationship Caudal vs. Injection Pressure and comparing the treated surfaces with those that were not exposed to the air plasma.
