The replacement of areas of native forest by irrigated crops in the semiarid region in Brazil may negatively alter the soil physical attributes and may reduce the sustainability of these systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of irrigated coconut crop in some soil physical attributes in the semi arid region in Brazil. Undisturbed soil samples were collected at two different depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) in three distinct areas: native forest (Caatinga) and under dwarf coconut cultivation with three and 16 years of age. Soil bulk density (Bd), total porosity (Tp), macroporosity (Ma) and microporosity (Mi) were determined. Student t test to compare means was performed. It was observed an increase of Bd in the areas cultivated with coconut in relation to native forest. The Tp and Ma values was reduced in the areas planted with coconut compared to the Caatinga area. Therefore, in general, it was observed decrease in the soil physical quality from the cultivated area as compared with the native forest. This was mainly due to the use of agricultural implements in cultivated areas and the practice of furrow irrigation. The reduction of soil physical quality was more pronounced in the second depth (20-40 cm), this effect at 0-20 cm is mitigated by root growth mainly in the older coconut area (16 years of cultivation).
