This paper presents archaeological and historical data obtained from valleys and foot-hills around the central Sierras de Córdoba, Argentina, known as the Sierras Grandes. A preliminary analysis of late pre-Hispanic social processes (ca 900-1573 AD) and continuities in native organization during the early Spanish colonial period (1573-1620) is offered on the basis of these data. The late pre-Hispanic period is defined by the development of processes of agricultural expansion in the region. The mountain societies integrated this agriculture into their traditional hunter-gatherer practices. In relation to this economic transformation, the evolution of the way of life (modo de vida) articulated several innovations and continuities. A small productive system, defined by little use of technology and high levels of loss, was configured. The reproduction of this system permitted population dispersal and the continuity of a period characterized by political fragmentation. At the same time, a significant intensification of extractive practices has been recorded, implying a continuity of mechanisms such as seasonal dispersion and the rise of group contexts for the appropriation and consumption of wild resources. The complexity of these processes is a warning about the limitations of some categories and concepts used to describe the population in the case study area: small agriculturalist societies, formative adaptation, tribal organization, neolithization, etc.
