VISUAL AND SPATIAL TRANSFORMATIONS AND CONTINUITIES IN THE DIAGUITA PETROGLYPHS FROM SEMIARID NORTHERN CHILE: A SPATIAL ANALYSIS USING GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS. The following work seeks to understand the role of rock art during the Tawantinsuyu expansion in the semiarid north of Chile. To this end, a sample of 796 rock art panels assigned to the Late and Late Intermediate Periods (AD 1 - 1540) and 287 motifs of Inca influence, all found within the Illapel and Chalinga valleys, were analyzed. The analysis sought to determine the visual and spatial continuities and transformations of rock art at different scales through Geographic Information Systems tools. The results demonstrate that during the Late Period there was an intensification in the production of petroglyphs, iconographic integration, and a spatial association between rock art places and mobility routes. These elements are interpreted as indicators of social, political and economic transformations, driven by social leaders who oriented rock art practice to legitimize a new social order and facilitate new economic practices.
