This article began as a lecture at the 1st National Meeting of Students of Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Astronomy and Geophysics at UNLP in 2015, and then evolved into its present form. In it the views about science and scientists among students and their possible relation to attitudes towards science, particularly those which school science promotes, are discussed. The need to consider these issues arises when thinking about the teaching of science. A proposal aimed towards what a student should know to achieve an adequate understanding of the nature of science is presented. To move in this direction, arguments against the traditional conception of existence of "the" scientific method are introduced and a perspective on scientific methodology closer to actual scientific activity, including useful tools for learning Natural Sciences, is proposed. The characteristics of scientific knowledge are also discussed. Finally didactic considerations arising from the exposed arguments, identifying those aspects that can be approached from teaching and public communication of science which may encourage young people to study scientific careers are presented.
