In the scientific context, language can be understood in different ways: as a system for transmitting information, as an interpretative system for making sense of experience and as a tool for participation in communities of practice. This quantitative and qualitative study, conducted with initial, intermediate and advanced students and professors of Biology-related university careers, will consider the students’ and teachers’ conceptions about the role that language plays at scientific work. The study group usually highlighted the value of writing for communicating data and omitted mentioning its potential as a thinking tool. Taking the gathered results and our theoretical referents into account, we conclude that students and teachers predominantly conceive language as a system for transmitting information.
