In this paper, it is analyzed the university extension as a legitimation strategy, framed on the convergences and differences in a university field characterized by the institutional differentiation. The study focuses on 4 institutions, 2 public and 2 private universities placed at Buenos Aires City. The institutional presentation, the meaning and organization of the extension, and the uses of institutional history, and the context and audience of the institutions, are all analyzed. The uses of spatial metaphors are described, as well as the different meanings about university education. It concludes that university extension is developed to maintain legitimacy, and it is sustained by the inclusion/exclusion dynamics, that is to say, the selective mechanism of university. In the relationship stablished with institutions outside the university, the legitimacy is solved working with popular sectors, as well as companies (private sector), NGOs and the State.
