The study of the nomenclatural type and numerous specimens from different herbaria, the extensive analysis of plants in their habitat in Central and Northern Patagonian Argentinean regions, as well as the study of seedlings and juvenile individuals cultivated from seeds, allowed us to establish the identity of S. fasciculatus var. arenicola (Hauman) F. A. Barkley as a synonym of S. johnstonii F. A. Barkley. This variety was described by Hauman (1913) as S. dependens Ortega subsp. subintegra Engl. fo. arenicola Hauman, based on a young individual of S. johnstonii. In addition, the validity of S. sinuatus (Griseb.) Engl. is discussed. Both taxa are described and illustrated and leaf characteristics of the juvenile specimens are mentioned. The complete synonymy and a key to identify related species is included.
