Azospirillum brasilense Az39 strain is one of the bacteria most used for improving growth and productivity of different important crops, such as sugar cane. Thus this work aimed to evaluate the ability of Az39 strain to colonize soil and different young sugar cane tissues under greenhouse conditions, and to analyze if this colonization had a growth promoting effect. For this, a completely randomized design was used in which different sugar cane propagation organs (isolated buds and one and two-node setts) were inoculated by irrigation with commercial biofertilizers AZP and Gramen (Azur Soil SA), which contain Az39 strain. On different post inoculation days, we evaluated some growth and development parameters, namely number of green leaves, aerial stem and root length, and aerial and root fresh weight. We also evaluated the presence of Az39 strain on rizosphere soil samples, and its ability to endophytically colonize different inoculated sugar cane tissue samples. It was observed that after bacterial inoculation, sugar cane plants showed higher root and aerial development, confirming the ability of Az39 strain to promote early sugar cane growth. This growth promoting effect induced by Az39 strain was observed in all sugar cane propagation organs, and was strongly associated with endophytic and rhizosphere bacterial colonization of different sugar cane tissues.
