CHAVANNE, Ernesto R.; DIAZ, Jorge V.; GARCIA, María B.  e  CUENYA, María I.. Comparison of two spatial analysis methods used at early stages of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) selection program in Tucumán, Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2019, vol.96, n.1, pp.01-05. ISSN 1851-3018.

This work compares the efficiency of two spatial analysis methods when used at the second stage of selection in the sugarcane breeding programme of Estación Experimental Agroindustrial Obispo Colombres (Tucumán, Argentina). Two trials that had been planted in May 2010 at first ratoon age were evaluated: one of them consisted of 200 clones Serie 2008 and 20 pairs of controls, planted in Santa Ana (Río Chico), and the other included 25 clones Serie 2008 and four pairs of controls, planted in Las Talitas (Tafí Viejo). Spatial data fitting methods were compared by calculating the relative efficiency of the normalization index and the first-order spatial autoregressive model in relation to the assessment of the following five variables: stalk number, individual stalk weight, estimated factory yield (%), and kilograms of cane and sugar per plot. The relative efficiency of the Normalizated Index proved to be inconsistent and depended on the assessed parameter: it ranged from 2.9% to 38.2% in Santa Ana, and from 0.0% to 79.8% in Las Talitas. Spatial Analysis showed a higher relative efficiency, with values between 14.4% and 262.5% in Santa Ana, and between 16.5% and 106.9% in Las Talitas. Correlation coefficients between fitted and unfitted values were consistently higher in Spatial Analysis, thus demonstrating that this method can be used to improve procedures at early stages of sugarcane genotype selection.

Palavras-chave : relative efficiency; early stages of selection; spatial analysis.
