MACHADO, Walter D.; MOLINA, César F.; QUAIA, Eugenio A.  e  PAZ, Dora. Calculation of the volume and determination of start-up parameters of a high-rate semi-industrial anaerobic reactor to treat citrus effluent in the province of Tucumán. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2022, vol.99, n.1, pp.13-19. ISSN 1851-3018.

The aim of this work is to present the main parameters and calculations to the design of UASB reactors to treat lemon industrialization effluents.  Main characteristics from the effluent, as organic matter (10 KgCOD/m3 ), the biomass concentration of anaerobic sludge (32,8 KgVSS/m3 ) and specific methanogenic activity (0,15 KgCOD/KgVSS.d), as well as the reactor architecture, were taken into account. As reactor design criterion to treat high organic loads effluents the organic loading rate (OLR) was adopted. In this case, the necessary calculations were made for the construction and operation of an industrial prototype reactor with capacity to treat a fraction around of 8% of the total effluent generated by industrial lemon processing plant. As a result, a 50 m3 UASB reactor was projected, able to treat 50 m3 of effluent daily with 75% of organic matter removal and a daily production of 328 m3 of biogas.
