It is admitted worldwide that forests contribute to mitigating poverty in rural zones. At regional level, small farmers have vast experience in forest management. However, it is still necessary to file such contribution to the rural family. To do so, it seems appropriate to design a systematic approach to reality that allows knowing the share of forests within the productive rural systems. Aiming at characterizing the various relationships existing between the communities and their forest use strategies, an exploratory survey was made by interviewing the technicians of the NGO accompanying to more than 20 rural communities of different Departments of the Province of Santiago del Estero in order to identify productive systems out of their forest use strategies. The variables chosen were those that could determine the resources use type. Data were analyzed using multivariate analyses techniques such as the main coordinate analysis and the cluster analysis. From the results, two predominant use strategies were identified: the one in which forest use is part of a diversified and integral productive strategy that saves great deal of resources for self-consumption, the other in which the forest is part of the productive system by providing wooden forest products that makes evident a simplified productive system where the forest just generates capital through the market.
