FRIDRICH, Adriana D. et al. Obesity and insulin resistance relationship with elevated prostate specific antigen. Rev. cienc. tecnol. [online]. 2012, n.18, pp.44-49. ISSN 1851-7587.

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most prevalent tumor in Western men aged over 50. Obesity and insulin resistance (IR) would be involved in its beginning and progression. Our objective was to evaluate the relationship of General and Abdominal Obesity with elevated PSA, to determine the degree of IR through various surrogate markers as HOMA and TG / HDL-Cholesterol indices and to establish the possible association with circulating PSA levels. We studied 103 men between 45 and 65 years of age. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and they underwent blood sampling for the determination of total and free PSA, Triglycerides, HDL-Col, Insulin, Glucose and with the latter the HOMA index was calculated. Results showed 44% of patients had elevated PSA values. We found no association between PSA and BMI, but some with waist circumference. In assessing whether there was certain correlation between PSA and the HOMA index and triglycerides / HDL-Col, no significant differences were found. We are able to conclude that the association found in abdominal obesity with elevated PSA suggests that we could use this parameter as a potential risk factor for the development of prostate disease, such as cancer.
