BOTERO G., Mario Martín. The Birth of the Grail in Robert de Boron's Joseph d'Arimathie. Scripta Mediaevalia [online]. 2017, vol.10, n.1, pp.43-80. ISSN 1851-8753.
Robert de Boron's Joseph d'Arimathie (c. 1200) intends to build the history of the Grail and to insert it in the context of sacred history. In this way, the Grail is totally Christianized and placed in the center of a strategy to turn it into a relic. This paper studies the process that makes «the Grail» out of a simple and ordinary vase, that is, a functional object. First, we show the way the author managed to extent the sacred history in order to insert the vase in this new context. Then we expose the construction of a link between the blood of Jesus and the recipient in order to big up its new dimension as a divine symbol. Therefore, our goal is to understand the first steps of an ordinary recipient, which transform it into a symbol of divine grace.
