This paper aims to summarize the main features of a research targeted to give a new answer to a subject commonly studied by the Thomist: What is abstraction for Aquinas? This task is justified by the existence of multiple disagreements on the nature of this operation and its role as the cause of the distinctions of scientific objects. On the contrary, I suggest that the word abstraction -along with its derivate expressions- is used by Aquinas to denote different things but without any vagueness. Thus, it means a lot more than a cognitive operation.
