This article aims to explore certain new patterns of press-government conflicts that emerged in the peculiar Latin American scenario constituted by two developments. On one side, a substantially changed (modernized) role and weight in politics of the press and journalism that emerged after a decade of neoliberal reforms that reached the regional media institutions. On the other side, the presence of a series of national governments that combine leftist identities and agendas with populist appeals in a fashion that drives them to clash against the press and the big media. The considered cases are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Venezuela.
