In the Shadow of the Caudillos

This article focusses on the discursive representations of a phenomenon which was considered, from the Nineteenth Century onwards, as typically Latin American: caudillismo. It is centered on the arguments developed in reference to that figure and his role in the new States created after Independence by four writers: Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Justo Sierra, Francisco García Calderón and Laureano Vallenilla Lanz. Through an analysis of their writings, the text has sought to demonstrate the importance of the discussion of caudillismo as a discursive, theoretical tool for the analysis of the region’s problems and its possible solutions. The incorporation of the figure of caudillismo into the debates surrounding Latin American identity, its construction as a topic also formed an integral part of the political and social reality of Latin America, despite the fact that the most recent historiography has tended to coincide in emphasizing the manners in which it differed from the concrete historical reality of actual, living, caudillos. These are the chief hypotheses that have guided the research presented in this article.
