NORAMBUENA, Carmen. El exilio chileno: río profundo de la cultura iberoamericana. Sociohistórica [online]. 2008, n.23-24, pp.163-195. ISSN 1852-1606.

The Chilean Diaspora after the 1973 military coup d´etat gave rise to an impacting cultural phenomenon, and this exile, despite all its negative consequences, inspired an extraordinary blossoming of major projections in the arts and literature. This cultural phenomenon caused and still motivates the interests of scholars from several disciplines. Among the thousands of Chileans dispersed in exile all around the world, there is a qualitatively relevant group made up of writers, painters, sculptors, craftsmen, musicians, movie and theater artists, scientists and academics from different fields and disciplines. For example, there were theater companies in several countries and various well-known musical groups that toured all continents. In most important cities in Europe and the Americas one could find exhibitions by exiled Chilean painters, photographers and sculptors; at the same time, in the context of solidarity demonstrations, works of art by professional and amateur artists were sold. All these activities provided an income that allowed that several of these exiled artists could survive from their work.
