The Argentine automotive industry expanded with the formation of Mercosur. In recent years, the branch reached record in production, exports and sales; that could serve as an example of a “new production stage”. However, since late 2013 the complex undergoes a crisis that has caused a considerable drop in its indicators, suspensions and even layoffs at auto parts companies. In this article, we propose to review the indicators (scale and market, productivity, labor costs, trade balance) in historical perspective and in the context of international competition. The aim is to determine whether the present situation corresponds to a cyclical problem, or if on the contrary expresses historical limits that the automotive industry in Argentina has not overcome; we also explore its prospects
